I'm thinking of trying a new experiment. In the past, I've tried going without television (I think it was for either one or three months) and I've also tried going carless for one month. Both experiments have had positive effects on my life. I definitely ride my bike more and watch less t.v.
This new experiment is to go one month without eating out. I can't decide if I want it to be no eating out fast food, or no eating out whatsoever. I think I'll try for the harder version - none whatsoever - but be gentle on myself if I cheat. I will hold fast to the no fast food experiment.
But what qualifies as fast food? Definitely the big chains - McD's, Wendy's, Krystal's, Chick-Fil-A, Church's Chicken, Subway. These are the six I tend to go to. Not really a Burger King, Hardies, etc. person. Just looked at the list of fast food places in the U.S. on wikipedia. It's a massive list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fast_food_restaurants#United_States)! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fast_food_restaurants#United_States I guess from the list, the ones I could add include Waffle House, IHOP, Krispy Kreme, Moe's, Pizza Hut.
But, the list of local restaurants I frequent makes it a much bigger affair. I frequently meet friends places, either for lunch during work hours, after Sunday service, or on the weekends. I think what I'll need to do is plan to eat beforehand (or bring my lunch with me), and then just have a drink at the restaurant. I will allow this concession to maintain a social life!
Having a CSA helps. It keeps me on my toes, having to figure out creative dishes from new and copious amounts of veggies.
